Mayan Cenotes

A type of freshwater-filled limestone sinkhole. Wikipedia

The largest concentration of cenotes in the Yucatan surround Akumal Mexico in the Mayan Riviera. These natural sinkholes can be found in either direction on Highway 307 just outside of Akumal. Early Mayans believed cenotes were sacred wells of the gods.

If you prefer to venture out on your own, just get in the car and drive north or south on Highway 307 where you will pass numerous cenote parks. There is usually a small entrance fee.

Akumal Cenote hopping

Cenote hopping is a fun way to spend the day at your own pace away from the crowds, so load up your cooler with drinks and snacks and hit the road. Bathe in the cool, refreshing waters, worship the sun, and explore hidden caves.

If you decide to swim and/or snorkel the natural beauty of the cenotes, please remember not to wear sunscreen or insect repellent in the water, protect yourself by wearing a t-shirt. The chemicals in these products harm the cenote’s delicate eco-balance.
