Akumal Tip #040 - Nature reserves in the Riviera Maya
For a review of the Sian Ka’an Jungle Tours, read our detailed article about the Sian Ka’an nature reserves in Riviera Maya.
Here is an excerpt from an interview with a rental properties insider about other nature reserves in Riviera Maya.
What about other nature reserves in Riviera Maya?
Another good one is the Jungle Place in Chemuyil - which is just 10 minutes south of Akumal Mexico in the Riviera maya - where they have the toucans and the monkeys that they have saved. It’s a nature reserve. It’s inland in Chemuyil. You go into Chemuyil and it’s 7 kilometers in the jungle. They have a few rooms where you can stay.
It’s really neat because you get to interact with the monkeys. You actually get to go into their cages and hang out with them. You get to touch them, pet them, see how they live, see how they interact with you.
Sian Ka’an is a bioreserve - off the Riviera Maya and Costa Maya - where the land is set aside where there is no building. There’s no resorts there. It’s a preserved area for animals. You can’t fish there. You can’t dive there.
If you are interested in the wildlife of nature reserves in Riviera Maya you should check out the Xaman-Ha aviary (bird sanctuary) in Playacar planned community just south of Playa del Carmen, 20 minutes north of Akumal. I would recommend that to anybody. They are a little pricey at 300 pesos per person, but it is a pretty place and you will enjoy it.

Totally agree about the Jungle Place monkey sanctuary!
I’ve stayed in the cabanas-darling little ‘houses’ fully equipped and kitchens, too. They are surrounded by beautiful green jungle plants, flowers and birds. It’s also a toucan sanctuary. It’s soo serene, and the monkeys are unbearable cute.
I’d recommend staying there, spending time with Heidi and Joel (cool people who run the place) listening to monkey stories, travel tips, and of course visiting with the monkeys.
