The Top 10 Indispensable Akumal Vacation Tips
So you don’t have time to filter through all of the tips and resources on our website to plan your trip to Akumal Mexico?
If you look at nothing else on our website, we present our top ten basic tips for you to enjoy a great Akumal vacation.
- Rent a car if at all possible. It will give you the most freedom and flexibility to enjoy Akumal. And a car will come in handy traveling up and down North Akumal. Otherwise, spend the money to take cabs. You can take the low-budget combi’s but the process will slow you down.
- If you are staying in a resort, venture out and explore the Riviera Maya. I know you want to get your money’s worth but there is much to do outside the resort. This is where tip #1 becomes most handy.
- Visit the restaurants in central Akumal, the Turtle Bay Cafe, Pescador, and the Lol-ha restaurant.
- If you are staying in central Akumal at the Hotel Akumal Caribe, understand there is more to Akumal than just central Akumal. Venture around the bend up to North Akumal. In North Akumal, you will find the romantic La Lunita restaurant on the beach, the lovely outdoor palapa Italian restaurant Que Onda, and the lively nighttime bar and restaurant La Buena Vida.
- At the very end of North Akumal is Yal-ku Lagoon. Visit Yal-ku Lagoon for snorkeling.
- Visit the Tulum Mayan ruins 20 minutes south of Akumal.
- One evening go to 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. Stay out late. This is where the night life is 30 minutes north of Akumal. Walk up and down 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen for a multitude of gift shops, restaurants, and bars. Whereas Akumal goes to bed early, Playa del Carmen stays up late.
- Go to at least one cenote during your Akumal vacation. Cenote Azul is a lovely cenote just north of Akumal before Puerto Aventuras. Go on a sunny day so you can jump in the cold cenote water.
- Touch base with your family and friends back home at an internet cafe. Make sure you have a Yahoo or Hotmail web based email account. Email them from the computers inside the CyberAkumal internet cafe at the front arch in Akumal. When you want to call a close family member, use the phones at the internet cafe. The international long distance calls are made via voiceover IP over the internet, so your phone calls are reasonably priced per minute. This is much cheaper than using the international phone cards at the pay phones, and since Akumal has broadband internet, the quality is very good.
- Bring your debit card with you. Pull out cash from an ATM which will dispense pesos and your bank card will do the conversion rate. Pay in pesos at businesses for the best rate, since they usually only exchange US dollars at a flat 10%. Feel safe using the ATM in the Chomak convenience store. But get there early and often in case the ATM runs out of money. Bring some US dollars and traveler’s cheques in case the ATM is out of money. While not every business will take credit cards or traveler’s cheques, everyone in Akumal, in the Akumal pueblo, and anywhere in the Riviera Maya will take US dollars, usually at a 10:1 exchange rate.
Whether you spend one week or two weeks in Akumal Mexico, armed with nothing else, the above ten basic tips are a good guide for enjoying the best Akumal vacation possible.
