Bahia Principe Akumal reviews: review by WeeSpideyGirl of Ottawa: "Couldn't be better -- wanna go back!"
Let me say right up front that we were blown away by this place, and enjoyed every minute. Very friendly staff, impeccable grounds and facilities, gorgeous pools, swank bars, amazing beach, and wicked snorkeling.
We were originally quite confused about this resort from the travel sites. It is actually 3 resorts in one, all under the Gran Bahia Principe brand: Akumal, Tulum and Coba. We stayed at the Akumal resort, and staying at any of the 3 gets you into the all-inclusive parts of all of them.
My husband and I had a wonderful time strolling around Akumal and Coba resorts, and walking the beach or taking the shuttle to get to Tulum. There are a couple of miles of beach here, rocky near the Akumal side of the resort and sandy towards the Tulum side. It's all beautiful!
Best parts: 1) the beach, day or night -- never had a problem finding a chair on the Tulum side, where the beach is better anyways, 2) the whole resort is amazing, grounds are great to walk around, 3) snack bars everywhere, loved the swing bar on the beach in front of the Akumal part, 4) snorkeling right off the beach in front of the resort - we brought our own gear, 5) food, food, food - what can I say - the buffets were great, but the food in the a-la-carte restaurants in the resorts was awesome - best were the Arlequin and El Charro, loved Don Pablo too.
You'll have a great time there. If you want a quiet beach, it's there. There were three weddings on the beach while we were there - awesome. If you like to play, you can sign up for dozens of activities on or off the resort. We went to Xel-Ha snorkeling lagoon for the day - a good deal if you take the hotel's all-inclusive deal for $69 US for the day. Let them take your pics - we took home an amazing 8x10 for only $12 US -- well worth it for us both to be in it and have such a great shot.
Bahia Principe Akumal review by beachbum from Vancouver: "Loved Akumal!"
The beaches were amazing! Water was incredible! Pictures really do nothing until you actually see it with your own eyes. We never got up early to go and get a chair to sit on. We usually got out there about 10-11ish and found one. We found that going to were everyone boogey boarded and kayaked was a good spot, it was a little of a walk but the beach in the water wasn't as rocky. And you were close to the water activities. The spot out by the big rocks is a good place to go snorkling if you dont want to go out farther in the reef. We went to the pool once, can't say too much about it other than that it was nice. We were throwing the football around after 6pm in the pool and someone had taken one of our towels, (if you lose your towel card its $50US)...luckily the guy at the towel bar was nice enough and gave us a towel so we didn't have to pay.
The entertainment at night was really good. We really enjoyed it. Very entertaining after dinner. Just make sure that if you want to sit at where there is a table to arrive a bit earlier than 9pm before the shows start. The entertainment crew is very nice and the MC is awesome!
For the food: I personally loved the buffet! I thought that it was very good. Breakfast is really good. Omlets were delicious. Lunch and Dinner were good as well. There was only one night were I got to have cooked prawns, but when I had them they were awesome!
Hacienda Dona Isabel is really nice. You can get alot of things there. Good for picking up gifts for yourself and others. Went to the Disco, alot of fun! Not many seats to sit at, but good music and drinks. Nice big dance floor in the middle.
For activities that we did: We went to Playa Del Carmen for shopping. 9-1pm i think it was. Just make sure you can bargain shop and you'll get good deals. We went to the Jaguar Cafe, good drinks there. Didn't get to make it over to Cozumel, my dad really wanted us to go. Apparently they make the best margaritas there.
We also went to Xel-Ha. One of the guys there told us to start by the floating bridge...huge fish!! I was latched onto my boyfriend cause I was scared. Saw a stingray on the sand. Lots of colourful fish so make sure that you bring an underwater camera! If you didn't, buy a couple from the tourguide because they are the cheapest! Everywhere else is $20US. Floated on tubes, we took a double, I'd advise a single. If you get stuck, either put your flippers on your hands or feet to help you paddle. Jumped off the cliff, that was fun. And to relax, we went to the lighthouse and had a nap on the hammocks there.
We also did the Hurricane ATV tour. That was alot of fun. I have never been on one and now I want one! You drive along the highway, and then go into this place and you get to swim in the Cenotes! Those are absolutly amazing! Make sure you bring a underwater camera for that! Crystal clear! You also get to hold a spider monkey. Bring sunglasses for the dust. Wished that we got to do the Tulum Ruins and the Sea Turtle snorkle, but we will save that for next time.
We also got to see 3 water Twisters! Those were really neat. The weather there was good. If it got cloudy or rained it only lasted for like hour or 2 and it was at dinner time and then by dessert time it was clear skys with tons of stars!
We had the greatest time at this resort. Sorry this is long, but I just had to tell you all what a great time we had. On our last day I woke up at 6am to sit on the beach, my boyfriend had to come and drag me back and drag me to get back onto the plane. We would both definitely go back there!
