The Colectivos

Another option of transportation for locals and tourists on a budget are the colectivos or the white vans that run along Highway 307. Although they are less convenient than taxis and rent cars, the colectivo is a fraction of the cost - only $2 to travel from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.

You have to get to the main Highway 307 (by walking), but once you are there, just stand and wait for the next van to come along - and they do about every 15 minutes. The vans will take you anywhere from Playa del carmen to Tulum and best of all they are air conditioned!

Speeding in Mexico

Driving in Mexico has its advantages. Wouuldn’t it be nice to not have to go to court and simply take care of the situation on the road for a nominal fee?

The good news is that rarely does an officer give you a ticket on the Riviera Maya for anything else but a speeding ticket. As the saying goes around here, “Stop signs are optional.” In case you do get pulled over by a Mexican police officer, don’t panic. Most of the police officers here are helpful and friendly, letting tourists continue on their way with just a warning.

Cancun trip

If you don’t want to take our suggestion of renting a car for your Riviera Maya vacation in Akumal — or if you don’t want to brave the drive on Highway 307 — then you will need to take a taxi from the Cancun airport to get to your destination of Akumal, about an hour to an hour-and-a-half south between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

If you are taking a taxi from the airport to Akumal, be aware that the price could be anywhere from $75-$120 for the trip. Ask the price first and then negotiate.

Driving in Mexico - Don’t worry about the stop signs, worry about the speed limits.

While driving in Mexico, it is best to drive defensively.

Keep in mind there is no formal drivers’ education here as well as cars in many degrees of disrepair on the road. Highway 307, the main road between Cancun and Akumal is a busy highway with lots of cars passing at high speeds so be alert and move into the right shoulder lane to allow other vehicles to pass.

Cheap Mexico rental car

We recommend reserving in advance a cheap mexico rental car at the airport in Cancun and driving the 90 kilometers south to Akumal.

It is an easy drive on a well-constructed, clearly marked highway.

You will need your passport (or bithcertificate), drivers’ license, a major credit card and must be at least 25 years old to rent a vehicle.

Keep in mind, for a cheap car rental Cancun Mexico starting rates are about $50 a day and that’s for a manual engine with no air conditioning, but you will have transportation to and from the airport along with the freedom and convenience to search out remote areas without the confines of bus schedules. It is worth the extra expense.
