As you read this, the exchange rate is 0 pesos to 1 American dollar. For the guaranteed best rate, exchange money at banks. Exchange houses are more convenient because there are more of them and they stay open later. Their exchange rate is the same or slightly lower than banks.

Do not exchange money at the airport because of their rates. Either exchange your money before you leave Mexico while still in Akumal, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum, or hang onto your pesos and exchange them at your bank back in the States.

Before you leave an exchange window count your money in front of the teller. Try to exchange a little money before you leave home, so you have pesos when you get off the plane.

Pay for purchases and services in pesos rather than dollars to receive a better rate and avoid confusion. You can always exchange pesos back into dollars at a bank before leaving Mexico.
