Getting to Akumal from the Cancun airport is an easy drive on a well maintained highway. Akumal is 90 kilometers south from the airport, so it should take you about an hour to an hour and a half to make the trip.
Follow the only exit road out of the airport to highway 307. Take the Tulum/Chetumal south exit. Please read our very important tutorial about driving safely in Mexico on Highway 307. There are a few different rules of the highway than back home, so make the determination if driving in Mexico is for you.
20 minutes into your journey you will pass through PUERTO MORELOS where you can gas up at the Pemex and buy a cold drink. There are several Pemex stations along the highway, but always keep your tank at least a quarter of the way full to be on the safe side.
Continue south on 307 through PLAYA DEL CARMEN.
When you pass PUERTO AVENTURAS you are only 10 minutes away from the Akumal exit.
You will see a sign that reads “Bienvenidos Akumal”.
Turn left into Playa Akumal by veering to the right and using the circle drive or glorieta for safety. Do not stop on the highway when turning left or right, always veer to the shoulder and wait for traffic to clear in both directions before making your turn.
After turning left off of Highway 307, follow this road into Akumal. You will pass an Information stand where you can pick up an Akumal Mexico map.
Just before the ARCH, notice the Super Chomack on your right and Mulgrew’s Lavanderia, Minisuper Las Palmas and Oshun Boutique on your left. Just behind Oshun is the Plaza Ukana where you will find the outdoor market, Dr. Nestor’s clinic, Lucy’s ice cream and La Boutique.
Continuing through the arch you will see CyberAkumal on your immediate left and Yoga classes are held upstairs inside the arch. Veering left will take you to the center of town and veering right will take you to the Lol-Ha restaurant, Lamanai Galeria, the Kid’s Club and the Akumal Dive Center. In the center of town, is where you will locate Peak Gym, Turtle Bay Cafe and La Cueva del Pescador on the left. Shakti Massage is just above the gym. On the bay side is the Akumal Dive Shop, TSA, Imelda’s Ecocina and CEA.
Continuing down this road will take you into North Akumal. La Buena Vida bar and restaurant is on Half Moon Bay next to Akumal Dive Adventures and the Corner Store. On the jungle side you will notice another convenience store. Also on the bay is La Lunita restaurant inside the Hacienda de la Tortuga hotel.
The winding North Akumal road will finally lead you to Que Onda restaurant and ending at Yal-ku lagoon.
[Editor’s note: The Akumal DVD has an animated video map of Akumal in its Extra Features section. The animated map takes you from Cancun Airport past all the landmarks to Akumal and then shows you how to get around town to all the restaurants and shops. It also shows you where the Pemex stations are located on the highway. You can see a free preview of the DVD here.]
