Tour guides for hire

When you visit any of the Mayan ruins in Mexico on the Riviera Maya such as the Tulum Mayan ruins or the Coba Mayan ruins, you can choose to pay for a tour guide at the site to guide you through the ruins.

Tour guides are usually waiting outside the ruins to offer their services. There are those who enjoy being ushered by the tour guides and find listening to them a pleasurable learning experience.

Do-it-yourself tour

If, however, you want the most freedom to wander around the ruins as you wish and would rather not be tied down to a tour guide and a group of strangers, here is a tip so you can have the liberty to explore and not feel like your missing out on some important historical information about these ancient structures.

  1. There are informational plaques at all the major structures on the ruins site in several languages. You can gather a lot of information about the ruin site and the individual structures by reading these plaques.
  2. At the Tulum ruin site, there is a bookstore near the ticket counter. When you are ready to leave the ruins, stop in the bookstore, buy a book about the ruins, take it back with you, and read it in your air-conditioned room.

The ruin site can be hot on a sweltering summer day. The tour guide will gather other tourists to be in your group — tourists from other countries who may not speak your language. This means you will have to wait at each station as the multi-lingual tour guide repeats his script in each language of the group.

Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
