Akumal tips:
Mayan ruin tips.
You will want to visit at least one of the marvelous Mayan ruins in Mexico located near Akumal in the Riviera Maya. Tulum, Coba, and the less visited but no less scenic Xel-ha archeological sites are easy to get to and inexpensive day trips, especially. At the left is a picture of Mayan ruin Tulum - one of the most famous of all Mayan ruin sites.
Here is our best tip for enjoying the Mayan ruins in peaceful serenity…
Here’s our big ruins tip, especially for enjoying the Tulum Mayan ruins: To make the most of your visit, get to the ruins at 8 AM when they open, to beat the mid-day sun and the loaded tour buses. There is an undisturbed serenity about these ancient places if you get there before the crowds - and you don’t have a lot of strangers in your pictures.
So wake up early. You have a rent car, right? If not, grab a cab or give yourself some extra time to take the combi. By car, leave south on Highway 307 an hour early. This allows 30 minutes to get to the Tulum ruins from Akumal. (It’s actually about a 20 minute drive.)
There are two different entrances from Highway 307 on the beach side of the highway. Turn left. Once you park, it’s a little walk to the ticket counter at the ruin entrance in the jungle. You can save some leg work and ride a tram for a fee. Or you can save some pesos and walk. About a 10 to 15 minute walk. Since you are arriving early at the Tulum ruins, be prepared that you may have no choice but to walk if the trams are not running until the Tulum ruins open. Leaving an hour early should put you at the front gate of the Tulum ruins 15 minutes before they open.
You want to be first in line at the ticket booth at the Tulum Mayan ruins entrance. You want as little delay as possible to start your personal tour. You want to step foot on the Tulum ruins grounds the minute the ticket booth opens because you have precious little time for enjoying this magnificent tranquil site without it being inundated by hordes of tourists marching the Mayan ruin grounds like ants.
Riviera Maya tours to ruins is one big popular activity on the coast. And the most popular of all Quintana Roo Mexico ruin sites are the Tulum ruins. Why?
Reasons: (1) they are uniquely situated on a cliff overlooking the turquoise blue Caribbean ocean, and (2) there are steps leading down to a cove with a small beach. If you haven’t heard, Tulum is known by its pristine beaches.
One hour is not a lot of time. So here’s what you want to do in that time. (You can always tour the site in more depth when the crowds start to arrive.)

The tour buses arrive at 9 AM. It won’t be long before you will see busloads of tourists arriving at the gate of this very popular Tulum Mayan Ruin site.
Take this little known insider’s tip to enjoy these Mexico Mayan ruins in peaceful serenity. It’s one of the must-see activities during your vacation in Akumal Mexico on the Riviera Maya.
