Akumal Tip #014 - Akumal is extremely safe but be smart
The people of the Mayan Riviera are generally warm and friendly. Violent crime is virtually non-existent in this area and even less in Akumal. However, theft does occur quite often in tourist areas.
Do not leave valuables in the car and make use of money belts and hotel safes.
If you are staying at a beach-front villa or hotel, it is easy to leave doors unlocked when walking out to the water for a swim, especially after a few margaritas. This is the opportunity a theif who preys on tourists is looking for.
Never pull out large amounts of cash in public. Take only what you will need and lock the rest in the safe.
Leave all expensive jewelry at home.
