Packing tips.
Akumal is on the shores of two bays - Half Moon Bay and Akumal Bay. Both are teaming with sea life, so don’t forget your underwater camera when you are packing. The Caribbean’s transparent waters have many treasures you will want to capture on film or digitally.
For a few hundred dollars you can get a nice digital underwater camera that is completely waterproof, has a large video screen, and takes great pictures. Since it is digital, you can quickly and easily upload your photos to your computer. If budget is a concern, you can get a cheap underwater camera that is preloaded with film for as low as $6.00 to $20.00.
Be careful of cameras with flashes. The direct light coming from the flash on a camera can cause “backscatter” which will appear like dirt or snow in your photos. The best way to light darker areas underwater is by using an external strobe to get really great pictures.
But for the budget conscious — or even the ease-of-use minded — you can still take nice pictures cheaply with aid of the greatest source of photographic light given to man: the sun. When you are snorkeling in Akumal’s bays or Yal-ku lagoon, keep the sun behind you as you shoot through Akumal’s turquoise blue waters for great pictures.
