Romance on Akumal Bay

Set sail for a romantic cruise out of Akumal Bay.

Here is a great romantic tip. You can take a sunset cruise on a catamaran at the Akumal Dive Shop. The catamaran sets out from Akumal Bay out into the ocean and returns towards the sun setting over the jungle.

This is a great activity and is moderately priced, only about $35 US a person.

Now for the romantic tip: Reserve the catamaran for two but make sure you request to reserve the entire catamaran for yourselves, you and your lover, and that you will pay for it.

What you don’t want here are strangers coming along for your romantic cruise out of Akumal Bay. They can pile quite a few people on the catamaran, so what the Dive Shop charges for reserving the entire catamaran for yourselves is not a bad deal.

We suggest this for the sunset cruise, not for the Robinson Caruso tour, which would be much more expensive for several hours. But for one hour, the price is right and you have a nice romantic activity for you and your loved one at sunset.

Be sure to bring a couple of bottles of wine and maybe a couple of beers for El Capitan and his mate. Don’t forget some plastic cups and a wine bottle opener! Check to see if your condo or villa has plastic wine “glasses”. If you bring white wine, chill your wine in advance but leave your cooler of ice in the rent car as the catamaran will have a cooler onboard.

You will have to play a balancing act on what afternoon to take your sunset cruise. As best as possible, you want to make sure you go when the wind is not high and the water is not too rough. Be aware if you go during high season, the wind may be a little chilly, so bring a jacket just in case.

Though this is not a fishing trip, El Capitan will allow you to do some light fishing while you cruise. If you are lucky, you will catch the delicious local hogfish which the crew will be happy to clean for you. Tip El Capitan and his mate well. Then take your fresh fresh across the road to the Pescador restaurant. Though they specialize in fresh fish, they will be glad to cook up any of your freshly caught fish for your dinner, and you can cap off your romantic cruise with a delicious seafood dinner and another bottle of wine.

Insist on taking a sunset cruise all by yourselves with only a captain and his mate onboard. A very romantic excursion through the turquoise blue Akumal waters.
