Everyone has souvenirs of vacations past scattered around their home or office. Whether it was a shot glass, a T-shirt or an expensive work of art that caught our eye, we have all had to have something material from our trip. Something we could take back with us, so that long after the holiday was over we could look at our little treasure and remember experiencing that special place. Akumal is a charming village you will not soon forget once you visit, however we have chosen five souvenirs we believe capture the essence of Akumal.

  1. Akumal is Maya for “place of the turtle,” so how could one visit Akumal and leave without turtle jewelry? Mexicarte has exquisite turtle pendants, earrings and rings. These original pieces are fashioned in silver and gold with semi-precious gemstones. Turquoise, amethyst and amber are just a few of the many stones used in the designs. With so many treasures to choose from there is certainly something for everyone. Mexicarte can be found in the Akumal directory.
  2. Akumal is also dedicated to the safeguard of sea turtles. Through the conservation organization CEA (Centro Ecologico Akumal), visitors can participate in the protection of these gentle creatures by “adopting” a baby turtle. For your $25 donation to CEA, you will receive an official certificate of adoption and the satisfaction of knowing that you gave back to the beautiful Akumal reef and its animals.
  3. Akumalian, Gonzalo Arcila, has published a book entitled “Quintana Roo, Window on Paradise.” The book is a stunning photographic journey that takes you along the coast and into the jungles of this still relatively untamed state.   4. Akumal’s original Turtle Bay Café and Bakery has been a morning institution for both tourists and locals for many years. If you have been to Akumal you have enjoyed fresh baked pastries and cappuccino at Turtle Bay. The café’s colorful T-shirts have fun logos and come in all sizes. Like the shirt reads, “Everybody must get sconed at Turtle Bay Café.”
  5. The most comprehensive souvenir of Akumal is the “Akumal: Paradise in Mexico” DVD. Read our review of the DVD of Akumal here.
