Akumal tips: Souvenir tips.

Every vacation itinerary includes at least one day of Mexico souvenir shopping. Even if you are the type to steer clear of the markets and malls while on holiday, there is always someone at home for whom you promised to “bring back a little something.”

Whether you need a gift for grandma or the pet sitter, here are ten suggestions with regional flair that won’t break your budget and can be found almost anywhere in the Mayan Riviera.

Mexican souvenirs

Children are easy and fun to shop for because they are thrilled by the mere thought of presents. Marionettes ($5) or noisemakers like maracas ($3) and wooden flutes ($4) are classic Mexican toys that become treasured keepsakes when the tykes turn into teens.

Speaking of teenagers, they are not the easiest crowd to shop for, but you might surprise the young miss with a hibiscus or animal print sarong ($10). Include a “How to Tie a Sarong” page you printed for free off of the Internet. If that was last year’s “something special,” consider a hand-embroidered purse ($8) made by artisans from Chiapas, Mexico. She will delight in the way this cute little accessory goes with everything.

Young generation gents will get a kick out of a shark tooth necklace ($9). This macho jewelry comes on an adjustable leather cord. If your adolescent’s bedroom is his lair, a wooden hand-carved jaguar head ($10) makes for cool wall décor.

Need a gift for dad or that special guy? Nothing brings back the taste of Latin America like a hand-rolled Cuban cigar ($5-10). He will love you for it and we won’t ask how you smuggled it past customs agents. Maybe puffing on a stogie is not his idea of relaxing, but who doesn’t enjoy lounging in a hammock ($10) on a lazy day?

Mom has been smiling politely and thanking you lovingly for your “thoughtful” gifts for years, now get her something she will really like and use. Mexican blankets ($6) are perfect for outdoor concerts, picnics or just curling up on the couch, and she will take more pleasure in a set of two hand-painted margarita glasses ($10) than a shot glass from Senor Frog’s.

Shopping before your return to the Cancun airport will save you a lot of money. So in between basking in the Mexican sun and frolicking in the Caribbean waters, remember the friends and family back at home with something more than an ordinary T-shirt, key chain or refrigerator magnet. Instead, surprise them with a Mexican souvenir that is provincial and unique.

For a while we pondered whether to take a vacation or get a divorce. We decided that a trip to Bermuda is over in two weeks, but a divorce is something you always have.

I bought some of the margarita glasses you show on this site while I was in Mexico and love them. Now I’d like or order some more but haven’t been able to find a web site to buy them through. Do you know how I could purchase some more without flying back to Mexico to get them? : )

Good tip? Bad tip?
