Akumal Tip #025 - Low-budget method of transportation from Akumal to the rest of the Riviera Maya
The Colectivos
Another option of transportation for locals and tourists on a budget are the colectivos or the white vans that run along Highway 307. Although they are less convenient than taxis and rent cars, the colectivo is a fraction of the cost - only $2 to travel from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.
You have to get to the main Highway 307 (by walking), but once you are there, just stand and wait for the next van to come along - and they do about every 15 minutes. The vans will take you anywhere from Playa del carmen to Tulum and best of all they are air conditioned!
But be aware that you will be dropped off just as you were picked up - on highway 307. So you will have to make it the rest of the way to your destination. Sometimes called the combis, the colectivo vans run from 5 am to 10 pm.
