Akumal Tip #007 - Driving on Highway 307. Beware… Stop Signs are Optional!
While driving in Mexico, it is best to drive defensively.
Keep in mind there is no formal drivers’ education here as well as cars in many degrees of disrepair on the road. Highway 307, the main road between Cancun and Akumal is a busy highway with lots of cars passing at high speeds so be alert and move into the right shoulder lane to allow other vehicles to pass.
A vehicle wishing to pass will signal you with a left hand blinker. When turning left from the highway, move to the right shoulder of the road and put on your left blinker. Wait for traffic in both directions to clear before making your turn.
A left blinker while driving indicates to the drivers behind you it is safe for them to pass. Distances of oncoming passing vehicles are harder to judge at night because of the lack of street lamps, so decrease your speed and allow yourself enough time to move to the shoulder.
Editor’s Disclaimer: Akumal Tips warns that driving in a foreign country may not be for everyone. Everyone should be responsible for one’s own capacity to drive within Mexico’s laws and allowed manner of driving when committing oneself behind the wheel of a vehicle.
Try to limit your driving to day light hours. It is very difficult to see animals, people and the ever annoying topes, or speed bumps, on the road.
Stop signs are often considered optional by the locals. It is no joke, slow down and look when you come to an intersection even if you have the right of way.
Taxis and tour buses drive very aggressively, so let them have it. You would be surprised at the number of needless accidents all because someone wouldn’t back down. Most of all, relax and remember that you are on vacation - there is no reason to hurry.
